Sustainable Transport
Sustainable transport is about moving people, goods and information in ways that reduce negative impacts on the environment, economy and society. Some options include:
- Using transport modes that use energy more efficiently, such as walking or cycling and public transport.
- Try taking a bus - you may be pleasantly surprised how convenient it is!
- Improving transport choices by increasing the quality of public transport, cycling and walking facilities.
- Improving the efficiency of car use, such as using more fuel-efficient vehicles, driving more efficiently, avoiding cold starts and car-pooling.
- Using cleaner fuels and technologies.
- Using telecommunications to reduce or replace physical travel, such as tele-working or tele-shopping.
- Planning the layout of our cities to bring people and their needs closer together, and to make cities more vibrant and walk-able.
- Developing policies that allow and promote these options, such as the New Zealand Transport Strategy.
Rotorua District Council has developed a Transport Demand Management Strategy and has a staff member focused on sustainable transport. Facilitating the Drivewise Rotorua Trust is one of their focus areas.
Environment Bay of Plenty has developed a Walking and Cycling Strategy.
Rotorua also has a very active Cycle Action Network, so get involved if that is your passion!
