Hows Rotorua Doing?

bright_future_final_logo_400

In 2003, Rotorua District Council initiated the ‘Bright Future Rotorua’ community planning process.  Through consultation, a safe and caring community was found to be the most important outcome for Rotorua residents, followed by health, prosperity and respect for the environment.

Progress Report

Monitoring shows that Rotorua District is doing well on a number of fronts including:

  • Falling crime rate and improving perceptions of community safety by residents.
  • Low levels of unemployment.
  • Reduced rates of school stand-downs and suspensions.
  • Increased levels of educational attainment.
  • Increased visitor numbers.
  • Increased real median income, though still below the national average.
  • Reduced rates of heart disease, though still above the national standardised rate.
  • Increasing levels of recycling.

Areas we are not doing well include:

  • Relatively high levels of reported criminal offending, despite improvements.
  • Poor oral health amongst the District’s children.
  • Algal blooms on lakes Rotoehu, Rotoiti, Rotorua and Okaro.
  • Increased numbers of annual road traffic crashes and casualties (mostly minor) since the year 2000.

Planning is ongoing by a range of agencies to address these and other issues.

Public feedback is being invited on a revised set of draft indicators, as part of the Rotorua Community Outcomes Review 2008.
